I’ve always wanted to have a sports ticker behind my basement bar. I know it’s mostly a novelty since you can just look at your phone, but it’s cool for parties, NFL Sunday, the College Football Playoff, March Madness, etc.
I spent some time working on building one out of a mini computer called a Raspberry Pi and some RSS feed software. I had some moderate success with it, but ultimately the level of nerd you need to have to make it work is too much for most people.
But thanks to legalized sports gambling and streaming tv, anyone can have a ticker, and it’s FREE! SlingTV and DraftKings partnered up to offer live sports ticker channels.
Here’s how it works:
- Download the SlingTV app to your smart tv, RokuTV, or Amazon Fire stick.
- Sign up for a SlingTV account.
- They will try to sell you a tv package when you log in. Pass on that and select the option to skip to the free content.
- Look in the sports category and the DraftKings channels will appear! Boom! You are done and you have a sports ticker.
The channels will change up depending on the time of year, but currently they offer football, basketball, and hockey.
That’s it. You’re done. You have a live sports ticker with scores and odds. Enjoy!
